The traditional greeting for the holiday of Shavuos is “may we receive the
Torah with joy and inwardness.”
One of the meanings of inwardness is intimate. And intimate implies beyond the
surface. Inward also means personal, as in the difference between “G-d” and “my
G-d.” Inward can also be understood as wholehearted: without distractions.
Joy is the key that unlocks all these qualities, helping us receive the Torah
personally, intimately and wholeheartedly.
And so it is with all relationships!
